On the bike, Daniela becomes the angry bird. Ambitious and impatient and the best of her triathlon self. Even above 400 watts, the death-zone of cycling, Daniela stays furiously on it. The gaze turns laser and her lips get touched by a devilish grin. After the ride there follows confession: “What I hate most about being a top athlete, is to be bound to egoism. Which I am not. I miss my friends and my family while being this lonely, world roaming nomad. And I also like to do nothing, to just hang around – but more likely, I like to be the best.”
Flat morning sunlight on a top floor gym above some random holiday village downtown Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – Daniela Ryf is an early bird. Especially when it comes to the treadmill, the favorite of her exercise machines. She loves to stomp the hell out of it. Dedicated, fearless to encounter the notion of the automatic, giving in as much pace as possible to reach bodily redemption. Sweat sprays from her limbs and a rainbow appears rendering the exhaust visible. After the session the white tip mesh of her running shoes has turned red.
Warm up laps, Daniela slams down two kilometers hauling a sponge on a rope. The partial object in tow line gives the scene a touch of fetishlike reverberation. “No dogma is my success. Customized training, there is no right or wrong, just working stuff or not.”
It’s Brett Sutton talking, Danielas Coach who used to be a professional boxer, greyhound and racehorse trainer back in the day. “I am paid to protect her. And sometimes this means to keep her off competition mode to prevent a burn-out. The sponge allows her to swim at ease and shut down thinking. It’s not her fault being slower, it’s just this thing restraining her.”
The Gas station was the Archimedian point of our stay on Gran Canaria. Before and after the extensive shootings with Daniela Ryf, we went there to get fueled. Gasolina sin plomo de 98 octanos for our rental and lots of “cortados” for us. Our predilection for this milk splashed espresso turned out to be more than just a matter of caffeine crave. It guaranteed for the benediction of the Las Palmas cab drivers whose union was running the bar.
